Some more on Polish SF

So while we’re on the subject of Poland, it is well worth checking out – or at least knowing about, in the case of non-Polish readers – the long-running Polish genre magazine Nowa Fantastyka [English page] [Wikipedia]. The magazine, established in 1982, has been running for a remarkable twenty-seven years, publishing the usual translations from English as well as many home-grown talents. The traffic, as is usual in such circumstances, is one-way, alas (just to give you an idea of the difference between Fantastyka and an English-language magazine, Fantastyka take submissions in no less than 4 languages [edited to add: 4 languages in addition to Polish).

It’s a handsome publication (I had a couple of stories published there a while back), more similar to Interzone than to the pulp format American magazines.

There are other such magazines around the world, and most follow the same pattern – translations from the English with some local writing alongside it, and we’ll take a look at a few of them later on. Meantime, check out Fantastyka!
